Fin DAC (the street name of Cork-born Irish painter Finbarr Notte), is to host his first solo show since 2021 in London’s St Martins Lane underground crypt gallery this October, exhibiting unique “homage” works paying tribute to icons of the art world.
The London-based artist, known for his acclaimed large scale murals across the globe, will be hosting his first solo show in three years within the UK’s ‘national’ galleries region. The nomadic creative and purveyor of a self titled ‘urban aesthetic’ artistic style is a confessed reluctant exhibitor, with this show a rare opportunity for art collectors and aficionados to enjoy a curated body of work from one of the world’s foremost urban artists.
Held over successive days on Friday 25th October and Saturday 26th October 2024, the eccentric and idiosyncratic setting for the solo show will be Trafalgar Square’s underground crypt gallery at St-Martins-in-the-Fields, an 18th century place of worship and architectural jewel, undoubtedly one of the city’s most spectacular and unique spaces, and directly opposite the world famous National Gallery and National Portrait Gallery.
The first solo show for the artist since 2021’s wildly successful Afterglow/Undertow is the culmination of the HomEage project.
HomEage
The project, a many-years-in-the-making collection of works on paper that are split portraiture with half of the image being the artist’s signature style, and half a being a totally hand-created homage to various living and dead artists that have played a significant role as inspiration in the life and career of Fin DAC – created by respectfully referring to their oeuvre as the foundation within the exhibiting artist’s style.
As reverence to the inimitable talents of the aforementioned distinguished artists, and a testament to their broad abilities, Fin DAC has purposefully ensured that all unique artworks created are in fact a recognisable reimagining. Via inspired processes and mediums of the artist’s choosing and not even necessarily using the homaged artist’s own mediums, Fin DAC has cemented a uniquely celebratory collection. This has created homages, as opposed to replications, as a way of paying full credit to their place within Fin DAC’s own interest in art and art history.
Collectors and guests will be able to be a part of the launch of a new show release (each of which will be a uniquely embellished hybrid illustration/print), a limited edition of 500 ‘HomEage’ show books (200 of which will include an exclusive limited edition print), a new topical original artwork on wood) of which is a retrospective piece based on Fin DAC’s own work, as well as viewing the other 24 original artworks on paper paying respects to the likes of Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Aubrey Beardsley, Jamie Hewlett and more it its entirety.
Trajectory
Since his previous solo show, that saw collectors from around the world fly into London amidst the uncertain travel conditions of between-restriction-lockdowns in the second year of the Covid pandemic, the artist’s own star has enjoyed a consistent trajectory with a host of sold-out print releases, a year-long commission wait list and significant brand collaborations and milestone auction house results.
Fin DAC’s official collaboration with audio giants and design innovators Bang & Olufsen produced a unique speaker cover for the company’s iconic A9 speaker becoming one of the fastest selling in history (now sold out) and selling exclusively within Harrods, where the collaboration was heavily promoted and honoured via a place within the splendorous and legendary shop windows at the Knightsbridge department store in 2023.
That same year, Holangi, an original artwork painted on gesso museum panel, sold at world-famous art auction house Phillips on Berkeley Square, London, reaching an artist auction record of £50,800.00.
These significant milestones add further public and industry intrigue in an art-scene outsider who unusually became a professional artist in his 40’s. The globetrotting mixed media artist continues to seemingly write his own scripts and achieve outstanding new feats year-on-year.
HomEage will be open to the general public on Friday 25th and Saturday 26th October between 11am-5pm, with two private view evenings (24th and 25th October) with press privileges.
