Experience

ATRA Studio, led by the visionary furniture designer Alexander Diaz Andersson, collaborated with architect Grant Blakeslee to create an exceptional interior for ILIS, a new culinary destination in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Opened in early 2024 by acclaimed chef and Noma co-founder, Mads Refslund, ILIS is not just a restaurant; it’s a sensory experience where design and cuisine intertwine to create something extraordinary.

Diaz Andersson’s design sensibilities are evident in every aspect of the 4,500-square-foot restaurant, housed in a former rubber factory warehouse with wooden rafters, faded white paint or exposed brick walls, and a corner skylight rising 17 feet above the floor. From sculptural, oxidized metal host stands to carefully chosen furnishings, every detail of the interior reflects ATRA’s commitment to modernism and futurism.

The restaurant’s layout, conceptualized by ATRA and Blakeslee, complements chef Refslund’s vision of a dynamic dining space. “Our design for ILIS is a reflection of our philosophy at ATRA Studio,” explains Diaz Andersson. “We aim to create spaces that are not just visually stunning but also deeply functional and engaging for both guests and staff.”

ILIS

A centrepiece of the design is the ‘cloud,’ a soft-cornered square conceived by Diaz Andersson and Blakeslee, which hovers over the kitchen area, defining its borders while also dampening excess sound. This feature, along with meticulously crafted furniture and fittings, showcases the dichotomous identity of ATRA’s Swedish-Mexican influence, blending perfectionism with comfort.

ATRA’s ethos of designing for longevity and relevance has influenced the choice of every detail inside the ILIS, from the custom glassware design by William Couig to the uniforms by Camilla Staerk. “We believe in creating spaces that are timeless, where every element has a purpose and a story,” adds Diaz Andersson.

The innovative design of ILIS is a testament to ATRA’s collaborative creativity and marks a new chapter in the culinary and design landscapes of Brooklyn.
