Festival of Art and Fashion at Patina Maldives

Archipelago of Artistry

Patina Maldives, Fari Islands is where art, nature, space and community harmoniously coexist and interact to create fruitful, long-lasting relationships. The many textures, forms, attitudes and experiences of our collection live together as an expression of the continuous cadence of life.

Through its partnership with Singapore-based contemporary art consultancy the Artling, Patina Maldives presents a curated collection of specially commissioned artworks to all guests. The permanent artworks aim to call to socially and environmentally conscious travellers that seek deeper connections from travel experiences.

Conceived by Talenia Phua Gajardo, Head Art & Design Hunter and Founder/CEO of The Artling, as a series of artistic encounters with which guests can directly interact, each bespoke piece forms an integral part of the island landscape.

Maps ensure guests can explore the artworks at their own pace, allowing them to integrate the power of art into their stay at any point.

  • Skyspace Amarta by James Turrell – Arguably the centrepiece of the island’s art collection, Amarta was created by renowned US artist and influential member of the California Light and Space movement, James Turrell. The specifically proportioned chamber with an aperture in the ceiling open to the sky is a manifestation of Turrell’s lifelong devotion towards exploring space and the light that inhibits it. It invites guests to contemplate their own perception of form as they immerse themselves in the sensual abundance of light, colour and openness in Turrell’s sky-scape.
  • Palms by Cássio Vasconcellos – This series of photographs is inspired by the engravings and landscape paintings of the traveling artists of the early 19th century. Created two centuries later and translated through the lens of photography, it is as if the artist as tried to go back in time to experience the sensation of discovering these sublime pieces.
  • Synthesis Monoliths By Hongjie Yang – A series of eight mirrored columns stand directly on the white sand, drawing viewers in and immersing them in reflections of themselves and their surroundings.  Synthesis Monolith plays with the notion of the uncanny; initial familiarity is undermined by uncertainties around the properties of materials, the objects’ origins, and the processes through which they were made.
  • Home Deep Blue by HIROKO TAKEDA – A six-metre-wide tapestry by New York-based artist Hiroko Takeda, whose work celebrates the traditions of Mingei Undou, the Japanese folk craft movement. Using blue and green cotton linen yarn, Takeda has created a heavy textural fabric of abundant movement and rhythm, light and shadow.
  • Los Límites De Lo Posible Ix By Jose Dávila – A series of stone sculptures in which perfect geometric shapes hewn from volcanic recinto interact with the capricious natural forms of unaltered sandstone boulders.
