Roseberys’ Antiquities, Islamic and Indian Art sale on October 25th features items from the collection of Masterpiece Art Fair chairman Philip Hewat-Jaboor, including Egyptian and Roman antiquities. Highlighted lots include an Egyptian granodiorite statue fragment of Ramesses III, a Roman marble lion table support, and an Egyptian alabaster jar. and collector, Philip Hewat-Jaboor. The collection will be on view in central London from 17th-18th October.
Hewat-Jaboor began his career in the furniture department at Sotheby’s, before setting up the client advisory department. In 1982 he launched his own advisory firm, working with connoisseur clients, interior designers and museums around the world. In 2012, he was appointed chairman of Masterpiece Art Fair.
Hewat-Jaboor lived on the island of Jersey, surrounded by art and objects with exceptional provenance. The most eye-catching room in the home was his purpose-built library and gallery. Its wooden doors were mounted with rare marble specimens, and it had a marble floor inlaid with porphyry, granite and alabaster, inspired by the 18th-century floor of the Sala degli Imperatori at the Villa Borghese in Rome.
Library
Hewat-Jaboor’s library was home to a notable group of marble objects and antiquities featured in Roseberys’ sale, such as the Egyptian granodiorite fragment of a life size royal statue of Ramesses III, circa 1183-1151 B.C., an Egyptian banded alabaster jar, circa 664-332 B.C. and a Roman white marble table support in the form of a lion, circa 1st century A.D.
“Hewat-Jaboor curated an erudite collection of museum-quality antiquities with strong provenance, and seamlessly integrated them into his home. We expect them to resonate with a new generation of connoisseurs looking to elevate their collections and interiors,” said Head of Department for Antiquities, Islamic and Indian Arts, Alice Bailey.
Further lots of note in the sale include antiquities from the collection of Michael Barrington and calligraphies from the collection of Qajar official ‘Abd al-Wahhab Khan, Nizam ul-Mulk.
The modern and contemporary section is the department’s largest to date with over 100 works, featuring works by Indian modernists F.N. Souza and K. C. S. Paniker.
