For the second year running, Art Paris, running from March 30th to April 2nd 2023, is partnering with Convelio, the leading fine art shipping specialist, the official transport and shipping partner of the fair.
Emissions of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, must be reduced as much as possible to curb climate change. And yet, the travel and transport infrastructure cannot operate without carbon emissions. This is why it’s important to understand and act to limit greenhouse gas emissions from travel and transport. For Art Paris, partnering with Convelio, is a step in this direction to keep this issue at the top of the agenda.
Convelio was one of the first art shippers to commit to sustainability through its Climate Care programme. This aims to minimise the environmental impact of the art transport business and support the art market industry in the transition to a net zero future.
Groupage
Convelio has previously put in place a number of services to support the eco-initiatives developed by Art Paris in 2022 to decrease the environmental impact of art fairs, including:
• A groupage service for the delivery of artworks from Parisian galleries that will reduce both transport costs and carbon footprint.
• A shipping service to and from the United States, meeting the criteria defined by the Gallery Climate Coalition in collaboration with galleries, insurance companies and specialised transporters.
• For transport that requires crating, Convelio will use triple wall corrugated cardboard boxes or bespoke crates made from ISPM-15 compliant wood sourced from French forests. Any offcuts will be given to bakeries in Ile de France for their wood-fire ovens.
For the 2023 edition of Art Paris, Convelio has gone further by implementing:
• More environmentally friendly packaging by using reinforced cardboard boxes for the smallest and least fragile works, or recyclable and biodegradable materials such as Elastok.
• A service to compensate for the CO2e emissions generated by each order. With each invoice, the quantity of CO2e emitted by transport is recorded. Convelio, with its carbon calculating partner, Squake, will then compensate this emission through two very specific projects: air biofuel, and a forest conservation project in Madagascar.
Guillaume Piens, Director, Art Paris, says: “A regional fair that favours proximity, locality and short circuits in terms of transport and visitor flows, Art Paris has been fully committed since 2022 to developing an eco-design approach, based on life cycle analysis (LCA), a first in the world of art fairs. We are pleased to continue this pioneering approach in 2023 and to partner with Convelio to minimise the environmental impact of transporting works of art and to offer eco-responsible services at the fair.”
Edouard Gouin, CEO and co-founder, Convelio, adds: “We are pleased to be the Official Shipping partner for Art Paris for the second year in a row. Art Paris’ dedication to developing an environmentally responsible approach to organising an art fair highly aligns with our own mission to help construct a future where both the natural world and art market can prosper.”
