Ivory by Gian Paolo Venier is a collection of furniture and accessory design developed around the travel trunk as the symbolic object, entirely realised by mixing contrasting materials and workmanship. Featuring wood and Corian, antique and invisible joints, the hardness of the monolith and the poetry of the carving is exquisite in the 15 objects. The items possess evocative, classic names such as Chatwin, Twain, Hemingway, Dickens and Miller to name but a few.
Paying homage to great travel literature, the collection consists of trunks of diverse dimensions, dressers, benches/containers and tables, complete with a series of maxi-scale trays that transform into original coffee tables on reinforced iron bases.
The pieces within the collection are completely covered in a shell of sculpted Corian, that is carved and polished as if it were a surface of ivory. Hiding inside are modular structures, made of prestigious wood that is worked with artisanal knowledge.
‘Hemingway’ is a table with organic shapes, made of cross-layered hickory. The different directions of the Hickory grain results in a texture that reflects light variably. The surface of the table is covered with Acrylic Solid Surface®. The clean and simple form makes it suitable as both a dining and a conference table. On request, the table is also available in larger sizes and different colours.
‘Chatwin’ is a container cabinet made of natural wood, covered with Acrylic Solid Surface® and engraved with geometric decorations. It consists of two moving parts that home a series of walnut drawers with interlocking finger joints and hand-stitched suede handles. The modularity of the compartments makes the ‘Chatwin’ suitable for numerous applications. Built-in hinges and micro swivel wheels allow for an easy closure and facilitate the container’s mobility. ‘Chatwin’ is a personal object that can be customized. The organisation of the compartments vary to ensure that the cabinet can be used in a variety of ways, and in a variety of places. The suede handles can be inscribed with monograms. A support that holds a wooden hanger can be inserted on the outside or inside of the cabinet.
‘Twain’ is Chatwin’s younger brother and preserves the same characteristics. Beautiful and unique pieces of furniture for any avid collector.
