Picasso and the Spanish Masters

The Carrières de Lumières, the first digital art centre in Paris, is set to hold a monumental exhibition: ‘Picasso et les maîtres espagnols’ (‘Picasso and the Spanish masters’).

The new immersive visual art experience, which runs from 2 March 2018 to 6 January 2019, will feature digitised masterpieces by Picasso, Goya and Sorolla. The artwork will be projected on immense limestone surfaces and accompanied by a soundtrack to create a unique audiovisual spectacle. A veritable invitation to go on a journey of discovery, this original multimedia show retraces a century of Spanish painting, providing visitors with an intense artistic experience.

The immersive exhibition, which focuses on Spain, brings together works by the great masters of modern Spanish painting. The first part of the show features two of the key exponents of the Spanish costumbrismo movement, Goya and Sorolla, alongside the work of Rusiñol and Zuloaga, who depicted portraits and scenes of daily life.

The second part focuses on Picasso, who was unquestionably one of the most influential great masters in 20th century art, and provides viewers with a panorama of his incredibly rich and creative oeuvre.

From Goya’s rustic scenes, Rusiñol’s enchanting gardens, Zuloaga’s portraits and Sorolla’s resplendent beach scenes, visitors are invited to go on a journey of discovery at the Picasso and the Spanish Masters exhibit.

They are then encouraged to immerse themselves in the rich and captivating pictorial world of Picasso. The distinctive forms of Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907), the soothing pink and blue of The Pipes of Pan (1923), the ominous energy of Guernica (1937) and the Mediterranean shores of The Joy of Life (1946) take the viewers into the heart of the artist’s creative genius.

Designed as a way to uncover the intricacies of Iberian art in the twentieth century, the digital and immersive exhibition ‘Picasso and the Spanish masters’ presents thousands of moving images of digitised works, which are brought to life via cutting-edge AMIEX® technical equipment.

As such, white limestone walls are transformed into masterpieces lit up by almost a hundred projectors. Exhibition goers can stroll around freely in the epic space of the Carrières to take in the dynamic projections around them at Picasso and the Spanish Masters. A vibrant selection of music will help enrich the visitor’s emotional experience, who will discover the masterpieces from the unique perspective of dematerialised art.
