Whisky Auctioneer Breaks Records with Million Dollar Macallan Sale

A Whisky Auctioneer auction has broken records as a valuable and rare 1926 Macallan sold for $1,072,000 (£825,000), which broke the previous sale record of $912,000 in 2018.

The whiskies up for sale, described as the ‘Perfect Collection’ had already sparked global interest before the auction started.

This was the first online whisky auction that saw a bottle sell for a million dollars. Bids came in from 56 countries all over the world, with 1,642 participants.

Founder of Whisky Auctioneer Iain McClune said: “Not only was the highest ever sale price for Macallan 1926 Valerio Adami achieved at over a million dollars, Whisky Auctioneer became the first online whisky auction to sell a million dollar bottle, with multiple other lots achieving hammer price world records.”

“For me, it is the diversity within the Perfect Collection that is perhaps the most exciting aspect. The breadth makes it an opportunity accessible for all.”

The Perfect Collection was built and nurtured by the late Richard Gooding, who was a private collector. Until recently the Collection was housed in his private ‘pub’, where the whiskies were displayed.

Another record breaking achievement for the auction saw a 1928 Macallan Anniversary Malt 50-year-old selling for $119,863 (£92,000), which had previously sold for $93,819.

Whisky Expert Angus MacRaild said: “The top end hammer prices demonstrated clearly that, not only can the online auction model compete with the traditional auction houses with these kinds of bottles, but in Whisky Auctioneer’s case it demonstrably outperforms them.”

The final part of this sale starts on the 10th April.
